Background The Town of Marana is presently served by seven different ZIP codes, including five representing the two post offices that deliver mail to our residents and businesses. The other two ZIP codes are assigned to non-delivery post offices that serve as retail outlets and post office box locations. Three of Marana's five primary ZIP codes - 85741, 85742 and 85743 - are assigned the city name "Tucson" rather than "Marana," even though Marana is the largest incorporated municipality in all three. To fix this problem, the Town is proposing that the United States Postal Service (USPS) change 85743 to "Marana," with "Tucson" being an acceptable alternative, and 85741 be left as "Tucson" with "Marana" being an acceptable alternative.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why Does the Town Want to Do This?
Marana residents and businesses experience a host of problems due to the confusing ZIP code system. Many people who live and work in Marana are proud of their community and want to write "Marana" as their address, but are unable to do so for risk of their mail not being delivered on time or at all. There also exist problems that many residents probably don't know about, including Marana businesses paying sales taxes to the wrong municipality, liquor license applications being sent to the wrong municipality, and even confusion among voters about what city they live in when it comes time for elections.
What Will These Proposals Cost Me as a Taxpayer?
Absolutely nothing. There is no cost to the taxpayer to make any of the changes that the Town is proposing. Insurance premiums will also be unaffected by a change from "Tucson" to "Marana" in either of the ZIP codes.
Why Isn't the Town Proposing Any Changes to ZIP Code 85742?
Town officials spent many hours discussing how to best proceed with all three of the ZIP codes in question and decided not to make any proposals for 85742 at this time. 85742 is still a developing area with many new residential and commercial projects slated to come online in the next few years. The area also contains some portions of the Town of Oro Valley. Because the "character" of the area is still yet to be determined, the Town has decided to hold off on a proposal for 85742 for now.
Would I Be Affected by the Proposed Changes?
If the USPS agrees to proceed with the Town's proposals, and residents vote in favor of the changes, any resident or business in ZIP codes 85741 and 85743 would be affected. Click here to see a map of the ZIP codes in and around Marana. If the Proposal for 85743 is Accepted, Do I Have to Change My Address? No. If the 85743 proposal is accepted by USPS and residents, most changes, such as your assessor's record, will be changed automatically. The only information that many residents may want to have changed is official documents, such as credit card statements. However, the 85743 proposal specifically requests that "Tucson" remain an acceptable alternative city name, so residents and businesses in this area would not have to update letterhead, business cards, advertising, etc. if they do not desire to do so. It is recommended that residents check with companies that regularly send them mail to determine if they would prefer "Marana" or "Tucson" on official documents.
