Employment FAQs
On this page you will find answers to the most frequently asked recruitment questions that the Human Resources Department receives.

We know that applicants frequently feel lost in the process of applying for employment. To make the system work for you, we have developed a brief summary of the most frequently asked questions. Whether you are applying for the first time or have previously filed an application, this information will be useful to you.

The following information is intended as a guide and may not answer all your questions; therefore, please feel free to request additional information by calling Human Resources at 520-382-1934.

All open positions within the Town are posted on the Town of Marana Web site. Make a point to check the Employment Opportunities page regularly or sign up for our automatic job notifications sent via email so that you don't miss an opportunity.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Do I need to complete a separate application for each job I am applying?

Yes - A new application is required for each employment opportunity. You may apply for as many jobs as you wish, as long as the positions are currently open.

Can I apply for a position any time I wish?

The Town of Marana only accepts applications for open positions, that is, any position which has been announced and for which we are actively recruiting. General applications are not accepted to keep on file unless the position is open.

Can I just submit a resume instead of filling in the employment history on the application?

No, resumes are not accepted in lieu of a completed application. Generally the resume does not address all of the information requested on the application.

How will I know what jobs I'm qualified for and when to apply?

Whenever a position becomes available for open recruitment, the Town of Marana issues a job announcement for the position. The job announcement contains a brief job description, statement of minimum training and experience qualifications and a description of any special qualifications that may be required, i.e., licenses, certifications, etc. An opening and closing date appear on every job announcement. You must be certain your application is received in Human Resources by 5 p.m. Arizona time on the closing date. This means you must allow ample time if you are mailing your application (postmark alone is insufficient).

How does Human Resources determine if I qualify for a position?

Human Resources staff assigned to the recruitment reviews the application submitted to determine if you meet the minimum qualifications and special requirements as stated on the job announcement.
Include not only paid work experience, but all other experience which may apply to the job, i.e., volunteer experience, licenses, professional affiliations, classes you have taken, training you have received and any other special qualifications. Failure to include all information requested could result in the rejection of your application. With accurate and complete information, we will be able to determine whether you meet the minimum qualifications for the job.

Can my education, experience and training substitute for specific minimum qualifications in the job posting?

The Town recognizes that qualifications are acquired through varied means, such as education, work experience and specialized training. Some positions do not allow substitutions. Where possible, the following substitutions may apply:

• Substitution of Education and Experience

One year of relevant experience that provides the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the position duties may be substituted for one year of required education

One year of relevant education, that provides the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the position duties, at the undergraduate level may be substituted for one year of required relevant experience.

Pertinent volunteer experience, which can be documented in hours, may be credited toward work experience. One full work year is considered 2,080 hours.

• Substitution of Specialized Training

Specialized training, completed in non-credit programs, must be documented and can be substituted in an hour-for-hour equivalency for work. One full work year is considered 2,080 hours.

What happens after I file my application?

Human Resources will review your application and determine if you meet the minimum qualifications. If you meet the minimum qualifications and are selected for an interview, you will be contacted by phone. If you do not meet the minimum qualifications, or if you meet the minimum qualifications, but are not selected for an interview, you will receive notification via mail. This process generally takes 5-15 business days after the position has closed.

Why wasn't I contacted for an interview?

Applicants whose experience and training are most closely suited to the needs of the Town may be selected for further testing/interviews. Criteria will be based on job-related knowledge, skills, and abilities.

What is the most common error applicants make when applying for positions with the Town?

The most common error applicants make is not submitting all of the required materials as posted in the job announcement. For example, if the announcement requires a cover letter, application, resume and supplemental questionnaire, all four documents are required for consideration.

What should I do if my address or phone number change?

Notify Human Resources immediately. We will make the necessary changes to your records. If we are unable to contact you because you have moved or changed your phone number, your name may be withdrawn from further consideration.

What should I do if I am called for an interview?

Be sure that you know:

· time and place you should appear for the interview
· phone number (important if you can't make it or an emergency occurs)
· name of person who contacted you
· to whom you should report for the interview
· how long the interview is scheduled to take
· the job for which you are being considered
